Hoffenheim dominates in the first half
Patrick Wimmer, who recently joined TSG Hoffenheim, scored his first goal for the club in less than 20 minutes. The Austrian opened the game with a goal assisted by his new teammate Nathan De Cat. Shortly thereafter, Wimmer played captain Wouter Burger through the defense, allowing Hoffenheim to double the lead - a pass that would have been stopped without VAR. Wimmer completed his brace with the last shot of the first half, scoring two goals in the first 45 minutes, matching his previous record of two goals in 12 DFB-Cup appearances. After the substitution, Bambasé Conté and Max Moerstedt came on and immediately combined to score another goal, opening the new number 9’s season for Hoffenheim.
Elversberg fights through
In contrast, Duisburg held the Bundesliga debutants until the half-time break. Luca Schnellbacher, 32 years old, put Elversberg in front just before the break. The 32-year-old had scored only three times in Elversberg’s promotion campaign but continued his strong pre-season by wearing the captain’s armband. After the break, Lex-Tyger Lobinger scored the equaliser. Elversberg had several good chances to take the lead, but Francis Onyeka, a loan player from Bayer Leverkusen, finished the match with two excellent finishes. His first goal came from close range, while his second, a spectacular injury-time strike, secured Elversberg’s place in the second round.
Result and outlook
With a 4-0 win over Erzgebirge Aue, Hoffenheim remains unbeaten in the DFB-Cup, maintaining the perfect record of Bundesliga teams. Elversberg, meanwhile, secures a 3-1 victory to continue its cup run, with Onyeka standing out as a key player. Both teams will face their next opponents in the following round, hoping to continue their successful season.
