TSG Hoffenheim begins the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with a clear objective: qualification for the UEFA Champions League. After finishing fifth and missing out on the top four by a single point last term, head coach Christian Ilzer is tasked with making the final step.

The club ended the 2025/26 campaign in fifth place with 61 points from 18 wins, seven draws, and nine losses. Their record of 65 goals scored and 52 conceded gave them the fifth-best attack in the league, but they finished 28 points behind champions Bayern Munich. The new season kicks off on August 29 with an away match against 1. FC Köln.

Hoffenheim's squad has undergone a significant youth movement in the summer of 2026. Seven new players arrived, with only Patrick Wimmer over the age of 24. Key departures included Bazoumana Touré, who joined Newcastle United, and Grischa Prömel. The club focused on recruiting young talents with high potential. The marquee signing is 18-year-old Belgian midfielder Nathan De Cat from Anderlecht. The deep-lying playmaker, who made his senior international debut for Belgium in a friendly against the USA earlier in 2026, is seen as a major prospect. Managing director Andreas Schicker stated: "Nathan is one of the biggest talents in European football in his position."

Other arrivals include the experienced midfielder Adam Daghim and attacker Patrick Wimmer, both bringing Bundesliga know-how. Defensive reinforcements came in the form of left-back Mats Rots and Germany youth international Cajetan Lenz. Star attacker Fisnik Asllani is staying at the club. Alongside him, 36-year-old captain and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann remains a pillar. Baumann, at the club since 2014 with just shy of 400 Bundesliga appearances, was Germany's number one during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

Christian Ilzer, who took over as head coach in November 2024, has fundamentally transformed Hoffenheim. He turned a relegation-threatened side into Champions League qualification contenders. His tactical identity and ability to develop young players are central to the project. Pre-season yielded five wins in six friendlies, with the only defeat a 4-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Ilzer's challenge now is to quickly integrate the many new young faces into his system and bridge the one-point gap that separated them from fourth place last season.

Goal threat must come from within the existing squad. Andrej Kramarić remains the central striker after scoring 14 Bundesliga goals last season. His experience and finishing are vital. Alongside him, Fisnik Asllani is expected to continue providing creativity and goal threat. New young signings like De Cat and Wimmer will be called upon to contribute offensively from the start. A full overview of the attacking options is available on our squad page.

The opening matchday sees Hoffenheim travel to face 14th-placed Köln. This is followed immediately by two tough home fixtures against Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart. This demanding start will be an early stress test for the reshaped squad. Last season's final standings highlight the intense competition at the top of the table. For Hoffenheim, the task is to find the necessary consistency from the outset to avoid another near miss. The development of their young talents under Ilzer's guidance will be decisive in this pursuit.
